The complexity of the songwriting and meaning is shared as Rye LaChance states, “If you asked me what the song is specifically about I don’t think I’d have an answer. The story pulls from so many different perspectives and experiences. Some of my favorite songs to write are ones that might not be personal to me, but may really resonate with someone else out there. Usually I write my songs alone like a total hermit, but this one was much more collaborative. I had gotten a bit wine tipsy at 11am with my now good friend Eva, who at the time was a stranger I had met that morning. She came in with this lovely guitar part and she, Matt and I just babbled on about life until the lyrics sort of fell into place in my head. It sort of pulls from all of our perspectives which makes it feel really special.”
The sound of somber violins lays a bed for the powerful songwriting of Rye LaChance as she shares more of her story on her latest single. Rye LaChance sings, “I thought I’d hit rock bottom / But I kept losing altitude / Convinced I’m not the problem / When I never showed you gratitude / But I still have it bad for you.” The beautiful ballad continues to pull back the layers of Rye and build a shared reflective experience for those who have come close to rock bottom as she adds towards the end of the track “I was bad for you.”
The self reflection and growth from the most recent release of “My Father and Me” now continues within the work of Rye LaChance as heard on “Bad For You.” Penning hundreds of songs since she was only six years old, Rye LaChance writes with the prowess of a veteran songwriter, working to make the world a less lonely place. “Bad For You” is no exception, pairing the same reflective storytelling and poignant delivery that landed her debut track “Widows of Normandy” an inclusion on Spotify’s Best Songs of 2024.
