Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, and cultural icon Mýa has officially unveiled her highly anticipated tenth studio album, Retrospect, released today, May 15, via her independent label Planet 9 in collaboration with Virgin Music Group. Executive produced by Mýa and MyGuyMars, and mastered in Stereo, Dolby Atmos, and Sony 360 Reality Audio, Retrospect marks her first full-length studio project in eight years, following 2018’s T.K.O. (The Knock Out). The albumers in a reflective yet forward-looking chapter in a career defined by constant evolution, artistic intention, and a deep, lifelong connection to the craft.
“Music wasn’t just a part of my life; it was the heartbeat of my home, the foundation of my joy. This album celebrates that spirit and the kind of funk that never fades. It’s a bridge between the past and the future, honoring the greats and my inspirations while forging something new,” says Mýa.
Ahead of Retrospect’s release, Mýa offered fans a preview with the single and music video for “Just A Little Bit,” a funk-infused collaboration featuring Bay Area legend Too $hort. The visual, which followed the track’s debut, channels the same playful confidence and vibrant funk-forward energy that defines the record—an aesthetic shaped by shimmering synths, bold color palettes, and unapologetic charisma. Retro-futurist in its spirit yet undeniably modern in execution, the track sets the tone for the album’s unique sonic landscape.
Drawing inspiration from the raw, heavy basslines and synth-driven grooves of late ’70s and ’80s Minneapolis funk, as well as the joyful R&B, soul, and pop soundtrack of her youth, Retrospect serves as a bridge between eras and genres. “We created this project with the intention of transporting listeners back to a special time in music and culture—a time filled with love, laughter, joy, and reflection,” Mýa explains. “The days of cassette tapes, vinyl, unforgettable gatherings, concerts, house parties, skate nights, and date nights. Who’s ready to go back?!” Anchored by the lead single “ASAP,” a Top 20 Adult R&B Airplay hit, the album captures a timeless energy while pushing Mýa’s artistry into exciting new territory.
