Projexx continues to heat up the season with a series of remixes for his summer sizzler “Sweat.” Today, he unleashes an uptempo remake from Ape Drums, the Grammy and Latin Grammy nominated producer and one third of the DJ/producer trio Major Lazer.
Ape Drums, who has done songs with Lil Uzi Vert and Denzel Curry as well as hits for Major Lazer featuring J Balvin, Anitta, and Nicki Minaj, says he is “really happy how this one came out. It is very sped up, but you can’t tell. I wanted to add a lot of elements and create a new bounce.”
The singer, songwriter, and producer’s musical lineage runs deep. Projexx is the son of Jamaican music producer Lloyd “John John” James and the grandson of Lloyd “King Jammy” James, one of dancehall’s most influential producers who ushered in the digital era of the genre in the 80s. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Projexx learned the fundamentals of music by sitting in and observing recording sessions of Jamaican dancehall greats like Bounty Killer, Elephant Man, and Vybz Kartel in his grandfather’s King Jammy’s legendary studio. At age 15, he started teaching himself how to produce, and at 17, he created his first song. Projexx grew up living between Kingston and Brampton, Canada, so his musical influences span from Drake to Dennis Brown and everything in between. Projexx has already cemented his reputation as a gifted experimentalist. He was a featured artist on “True Love,” from Wizkid’s seminal Grammy-nominated album Made in Lagos. In addition to Wizkid, he has also collaborated with producer Juls, Ape Drums of Major Lazer, Jamaican dancehall star Konshens, Grammy-nominated reggae artist Jesse Royal and Nigerian singer-songwriter Ruger. His 2023 EP GRIM TAPE, VOL. II (Warner Records) marries Projexx’s love for dancehall, hip-hop, and afrobeats and contains his buzzworthy single “Top Speed” ft. Giggs and Marksman. Previous projects include Queen Hill EP (2021) and GRIM & Family Vol. I mixtape (2020). His official full-length debut LP will arrive in 2024 via Warner Records.
