TOO GOOD, a darkly comedic yet heartfelt short film, will make its U.S. premiere this August at Oscar-qualifying 2025 HollyShorts Film Festival, one of the industry’s premier showcases for bold and innovative short-form storytelling.
Written and directed by Meron Alon, TOO GOOD follows a recently deceased man (Lil Rel Howery) who finds himself at the Gates of Heaven. Instead of the solemn judgment he expects, he’s confronted by an unconventional God (Jean Smart) who puts his life, flaws, and choices under an unexpected and humorous lens. What begins as a celestial interview quickly becomes a provocative exploration of human imperfection, redemption, and what it truly means to be “good enough.”
With her distinctive voice as a filmmaker and visual artist, Alon infuses TOO GOOD with both irreverent humor and philosophical weight. The film invites viewers to question their own assumptions about choices, consequences and worthiness. Alon, who previously directed the festival favorite ANXIOUS, is known for crafting work that disrupts conventional thinking and delves into the gray areas of human experience.

The film’s powerhouse cast elevates its sharp, playful script. Six-time Emmy-winning actor Jean Smart reigns supreme as a jaded, no-nonsense God, bringing both bite and surprising warmth to her portrayal of the Almighty. Opposite her, comedian and actor Lil Rel Howery (Get Out, The Carmichael Show) grounds the film with his signature wit and emotional honesty.
“Who doesn’t want to play God?!” Smart said. “Especially a version of God who’s a little fed up with humans’ nonsense but is still rooting for us. It was such a fun, fresh take.” Howery echoes that sentiment: “It’s not every day you get to duke it out with God—especially when she’s Jean Smart. This film is hilarious, but it also sneaks up on you with some real questions about judgement and redemption”.
TOO GOOD screens as an official selection of the 2025 HollyShorts Film Festival, marking a bold and memorable entry in this year’s lineup. With its stellar cast, sharp direction, and provocative premise, the film is sure to be one of the most talked-about entries at this year’s festival.
Arjun Yadav produced under his RSA Endeavors banner. Barbie Block, Robin Lippin and Ben Escobar serve as Executive Producers. The feature-length expansion is developed and ready for the marketplace.
